Repeal the SSMPA #EndhomophobiaInNigeria
The Issue
The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition act of 2014 is an act that infringes on the fundamental human rights of LGBTQ+ people in Nigeria. Since the bill was passed into law in 2014 by the Former President,Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the lives of LGBTQ persons have been on the pedestal of Police brutality, Mob actions, Discrimination at work places and Health care facilities, Extortion and unimaginable dehumanization, carried out by State and Non state actors. Also, the law stand between justice and the dehumanization of LGBTQ+ people in Nigeria. Hence when LGBTQ+ people face injustices, they are too scared to seek justice.
Repealing the SSMPA will to a very large extent, curb this dehumanization/discrimination of LGBTQ+ folks in our societyand further reassure the equality of all Nigerians irrespective of gender, class, sex, tribe, sexuality and religion.
Repealing the SSMPA will also lead to a better society because a society where people are not free to be themselves is a killer of dreams. It is impossible for LGBTQ+ people to actualize their full potentials.
Repealing this law will give LGBTQ+ folks in Nigeria, the reason to believe in the judicial system once more.
