The Issue

Kenny Washington had a significant impact on the National Football League (NFL). In 1946 he was the first African American to break the color barrier and reintegrate the NFL. I believe the NFL should recognize Kenny Washington for his sacrifices and accomplishments with a day dedicated in his honor.

Kenny Washington’s family and fans feel Kenny has gone unnoticed for 75 years; he was never recognized when he was alive. Woody Strode, who played with Kenny both in college and professionally, said: “History doesn’t know who we are. Kenny was one of the greatest backs in the history of the game, and kids today have no idea who he is.”

As you can see, the time has come to honor Kenny Washington and his role in reintegrating the NFL. Kenny Washington faced numerous barriers to reintegrate the NFL. As the first African American, he faced significant hostility from players on other teams, including physical abuse. Nevertheless, he stuck to it; He was a barrier breaker.

When Kenny retired in 1948, in his last game, 80,000 fans gave him a standing ovation, but where is Kenny Washington’s ovation now?

Now I need your support to make this ovation a reality. You can learn more about Kenny Washington by visiting my website, An Equal Playing Field, and you can sign this Kenny Washington Day petition.
