Stop the ban on pitbulls!

The issue

After a recent Pit Bull attack on seven year old, Darnell Minarapa-Brown, some of the New Zealand public are pushing for a ban on all Pit Bulls in New Zealand. While its true pit bulls can be labelled aggressive, it depends on the training and discipline of the dog while it is still a pup. Its ultimately up to the owners. Its a fact that Pit Bulls are still used in many gangs and are often used for dog fighting, adding to the aggressive stereotype. Unfortunately many New Zealanders have loving cuddly Pit Bulls who are loyal, and they do not need to be banned. Banning a breed of dogs will not stop dog mauling and attacks, proper education and screening for dog owners will.

This petition is more just to show how much opposition there would be if it were to come up again in the future as Pit Bulls are the medias favourite dog to criminalise. My aim is to create more awareness around the utter lack of education in new Zealand surrounding dog safety and behavioural patterns.

Many other breeds of dogs bite, and in turn can be quite aggressive, but they are often smaller dogs and do not do as much harm as a larger dog.

The local COUNCILS and the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT need to work together to enforce laws, and screenings for dog owners. Any and every dog deserves to be treated with respect and love.

Thank you so much for the support !
