Revoking Financial Holds for BIPOC at TNS
Revoking Financial Holds for BIPOC at TNS
The Issue
The New School is currently targeting BIPOC to pay off financial holds that were put in place to give the school more money. The holds have been targeting the Black + Indigenous student body costing them thousands of extra dollars to pay unfair amounts of money to continue the semester and register for classes, sabotaging student success.
These holds do not effect the mainly white student percentage, who in most cases have the money to pay. The racist targeting for financial “support” is not acceptable, and the New School has steps to take that we demand. This is non negotiable, we do not have to attend a University that claims to care about the BIPOC student body yet does the opposite in it’s actions.
If you need more money, ask for aid from New York State, ask for loans, create a fundraiser, stop pocketing wealth and targeting your students.
Our demands:
1. Revoke the Holds. No one should have to pay for a hold on their account if they are showing up to class and doing the work. Targeting the BIPOC student body is atrocious for a University.
2. Stop talking and start acting. You use the BIPOC student body more than you support them. This is an opportunity to actually change the dynamic of the university financially and institutionally.
