Demand The New School Supports Displaced Students & The Communities it Profits Off Of
The Issue
Max Freeburg, a formerly unhoused student, was evicted from student housing due to The New School's negligence and inability to provide support and accurate information. Max is 1 of over 100,000 students in NYC alone who experience homelessness at the hands of college institutions. People from unhoused backgrounds often lack access to legal documentation, making banking, getting a job, and even receiving mail virtually impossible. Colleges have operated under the assumption for far too long that every student has access to a stable home and unlimited resources. This institution was founded by scholars fleeing Nazi prosecution, and the school's refusal to invest in those who cannot afford to invest in themselves is the ultimate act of irony, considering it profits almost entirely off of the narratives of unhoused, marginalized individuals. Its neglect is a public proclamation that it is only interesting in furthering the education and careers of those who are not affected by factors outside of their control. We demand that The New School supports Max Freeburg with resolving the housing insecurity it directly caused, fire Evan Berent, and work with unhoused students/community members to put its money where its mouth is, and support the communities they have profited off of for a century.
