The Issue

A Sentence with No End Date When a person is convicted of a crime, they are sentenced by a judge to a specific punishment—prison, fines, or probation. But in America today, there is a "hidden" punishment that never ends: the label of “Felon.”

Currently, this label follows a person for the rest of their life. Even after they have served every day of their time and successfully completed every requirement of their probation, the label remains. We believe this is unconstitutionally excessive. If the court determines that a certain amount of time is the "debt to society," then why does the stigma last forever?

The Vicious Cycle The label of “Felon” isn't just a word; it is a wall. It blocks access to:

Employment: Many employers won’t look past the label, regardless of the person's skills or how much they have changed.

Housing: Families are denied safe places to live because of a past mistake that has already been punished.

Change: Most importantly, the label inhibits the ability for a person to truly grow.

When we make it impossible for people to get jobs, housing, or help, we create a vicious cycle. This lack of opportunity leads to desperation, which leads to repeat offenses. The current system doesn't just punish the past; it sabotages the future.

Our Goal: Automatic Status Restoration We believe that a person should be labeled a “Felon” only during the period of time they are serving their sentence and probation.

Once the punishment given by the court is completed in full, the label should be removed immediately.

By giving people a complete and full second chance, we allow them to thrive. When people thrive, crime rates go down, families stay together, and our communities become safer and better for everyone.

Why Sign? It is time to try something different. The current way of doing things is not effective—it only breeds more crime. We are asking for a system that recognizes human growth.

As the saying goes: “Who a person is today is not who they were yesterday, and it’s not who they’ll be tomorrow.”

Let’s stop the life sentences of labels. Let’s make the "debt to society" something that can actually be paid off.

Sign this petition to demand that Congress and State Legislatures enact "Automatic Status Restoration" for everyone who has completed their full sentence.
