Boko Haram is our Problem; Keep the United States Away!!!!
The Issue
Introduction
Hi everyone, I call on all concerned persons to sign this petition as there are plans by the current administration to seek for stronger partnership with the US to fight terrorism (Boko Haram). We must halt this for these five main reasons:
Main Points
1. The US has never suffered from any major domestic insurgency, besides very sporadic lone-wolf terrorism and the very rare external threat which is nothing compared to an insurgency that we suffer. How can you give what you do not have?
2. History shows that the US has one of the worst records at dealing with insurgencies. Vietnam, Philippines, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia (battle of Mogadishu), Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sahel region in Africa, among others. All those countries were left in worse conditions than they were before the US intervened.
3. The presence of the US in any country leads to more widespread radicalisation as global Jihadists will pounce on their presence to further promote an anti-Western propaganda.
4. The US has persistently maintained a 'consequentialist' position when it comes to human rights (especially with non-Americans) and this is evident in their use of torture and other unlawful measures like extraordinary rendition on a large scale. Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib are a few good examples of when they failed to practice what they preached.
5. Finally, if the US has struggled to defeat or even contain Al Qaeda and its affiliates (AQAP, AQIM, Al Shabaab) for over 14 years, and has only succeeded in creating ISIS with their counter-productive imperialist policies, how can they solve our own problem? They have also failed to nab leaders of Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Mokhtar Belmokhtar for well over a decade, how will they get Shekau? That the US can ever fight terrorism successfully is an embarrassing myth.
Conclusion:
From history, terrorism and insurgencies rarely ever end, although they may become inactive at some point, so rather than targeting a rapid victory that will make it worse, the government should consider managing the situation while it peters out. From the exploitative history of the relations between Africa and the West (over 500 years of imperialism), why would the US want to help us this time?
The House must stop this to safeguard our sovereignty. Our democratically elected leaders should stop being subservient.
