More cctv in Mitcham Town centre and more police presence

The Issue

Crime is a serious issue everywhere we go and on the increase especially in Mitcham. There has been multiple crime related events in Mitcham involving everything you can think of. There are many older and vulnerable people living in the merton Borough especially Mitcham again. 2 friends of mine were recently involved in serious events one was very badly beaten by school kids and one I had to stand in front of to protect them from someone trying to take his motorcycle and helmet. Both of these incidents the people who committed the crimes got away with it due to no cctv in the town centre and it's just heartbreaking seeing and hearing it all something needs to be done.

The Decision Makers

Siobhain McDonagh MP
Dear Jessica and all who have signed this petition, I hope you don’t mind me responding – my name is Siobhain McDonagh and I am the Member of Parliament for Mitcham and Morden. Like you, I am extremely concerned about rising crime and antisocial behaviour in Mitcham Town Centre. I need your help! I understand that the Metropolitan Police will soon have an additional 600 police officers, 500 of whom will be in 19 new town centre police teams based across the capital and I need your help in calling for our community to be home to one of these teams. I know how strongly our community feels about this issue and I have been encouraging residents to voice their concerns in the public consultation on London’s Police and Crime Plan. I have submitted my own response to the consultation and have made reference to this petition for the police to see. It is clear from the number of signatories to this petition that residents feel that there should be more CCTV in the town centre. Whilst the consultation closed on Friday, it is extremely important that your voices are still heard. I’m asking you to join me in calling for our community to receive this extra police support. Please take a minute to email your view to consultation@mopac.london.gov.uk. Finally, I thought you might want to see the Facebook Live I recorded in Mitcham Town Centre earlier this week about antisocial behaviour and crime – highlighting just how strongly I share your concerns: https://www.facebook.com/SiobhainMcDonagh1/videos/342568597873569. As ever, I am always happy to speak to anyone who lives in Mitcham and Morden about this or any other issue. Please do not hesitate to contact my office at any time at mcdonaghs@parliament.uk or on 0207 219 4678 Best wishes, Siobhain McDonagh
