As of July 1st 2017, Amateur MMA came to a grinding halt in Ontario. The government of Ontario and the Ministry of Tourism Culture and Sports made a new law that required the Commissions of Combat Amateur Sports to get an Approval to become the official PSO (Professional Sports Organization) for the Combative Sport in Question. So far approval has been awarded to some of the combat sports in Ontario. Here is the list: Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, Wrestling, Kickboxing, and Wushu. MMA, is one of the sports that remain undecided.
The AMMAO, or the Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Ontario was created in September of 2015, by the concerned amateur MMA community in the province of Ontario. Members of the MMA community were concerned for the safety of the athletes. With that in mind the AMMAO was created to ensure the safety of these athletes. Since 2015, the most prominent promotions in Ontario have all switched over to using the AMMAO as their sanctioning body for their MMA events. Between 2016-2017, the AMMAO hosted more MMA events than any other Commission in Ontario. During the short 2 years of overseeing the sport, the AMMAO has made sure that athlete safety is the number 1 priority, promptly changing their commissioning rules as the Unified Rules changed, such as stopping day before weight-ins and made them same day to reduce dangerous weight cutting. In the best interest of Amateur MMA athletes, coaches, trainers, gyms and clubs the AMMAO needs your support to help them become the official PSO in Ontario. Please sign this petition, together we can bring Amateur MMA back to Ontario and regulated safely with the AMMAO.
