Lets eradicate the use of euthanasia at pounds in New Zealand.

The issue

We aim to eradicate the use of euthanasia at pounds. We want to start small with the Auckland pounds and then throughout New Zealand. We need to bring attention to this issue because animals are only given one week to live once entering the pound. If their owner does not come and collect them in that time then they are euthanized.

More than 3300 dogs impounded in Auckland were destroyed in 2010-11 and only 670 dogs were given homes. An impounded dog is only given one week before it will be tested for aggressive behaviour, ill health and if it should be classified as a ‘menacing breed.’ Those deemed unsuitable for a new home are euthanized. Often these dogs are classified as ‘ugly dogs’ because they are no longer puppies and as aesthetically pleasing. Often nobody wants to adopt these ‘ugly dogs’.

If this petition is a success we will be saving thousands of innocent animals lives. Many dogs will be given a second chance at life. Help us create a change.

When euthanasia is eradicated from pounds the animals will be able to be put up for adoption if their owner does not come and collect them. We would make a website made to advertise the animals that are available for adoption and ensure that people know that the opportunity to adopt a pound animal is available. We also will be educating people on this issue so that we would stop animals being sent to the pound in general.

The minimum we would be happy with would be giving the animals a lot longer time to live at the pound, a month minimum. If this were to happen we would like to see the conditions of the pounds improved and the care towards the animals improved and increased. If this were to be the case we would like to see more no kill pounds so at least some animals have a decent chance of having a second go at life.
