Vote against the proposal for a new police headquarters on historic Jefferson Street included in Mayor Karl Dean’s Capital Improvements Budget (2015-2016)

The Issue

On April 21, 2015, Mayor Karl Dean announced plans to relocate the downtown Metro Nashville Police Headquarters to historic Jefferson Street in North Nashville.  The plan is expected to cost $23 million dollars.  Our initial investigation of the site selection process found a series of false statements, strong-armed tactics against property owners, and fast-track maneuvers to acquire the land.  There has been a lack of transparency with the public regarding the proposal for the relocation of the Metro Police Headquarters to Jefferson Street and an absence of community input from residents of North Nashville.  This new location of the headquarters could devastate the historical character of the neighborhood, which has been shaped by black educational and cultural institutions, businesses, and a strong civil rights tradition.  It could also increase racial profiling in a neighborhood where black motorists are already stopped by law enforcement at alarmingly high rates.  By contacting our Metro council members, we can voice our opposition to the Mayor’s relocation plan, while urging them to support community development projects that benefit all residents in the neighborhood.  If you are a resident of Davidson County, please contact your council member today and urge them to vote against the police headquarters on Jefferson Street.
