PLEASE KEEP LONDON'S NYE FIREWORKS A FREE EVENT

The Issue

Dear Boris,

This week you announced that tix to London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks would no longer be free and, in one fell swoop, have removed a fantastic FREE community event for the poorest in London.

We understand that safety and crowd control must be a priority but are baffled as to why a million pounds (100,000 tix at £10) is required to ensure this.

Many low- waged and unemployed families will simply be unable to afford £10, particularly as it is a flat ticket rate with no concessions for children or, the unemployed and disabled.

London’s  fireworks  have always been a free event open to everyone IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR INCOME.

We at Skint London  https://twitter.com/SkintLondon  would very much like it to remain that way so we've come up with a much better solution!

We’ve approached our friends at ticketing agent,  https://billetto.co.uk/ who, given the special nature of the event, is prepared to organize the entire evening for FREE.

 1)  At NO cost to your office.

2)  At NO cost to customers inclu NO booking fee.

What’s more they’ll throw in a FREE ballot to ensure fairer access to tickets.

AND they’ll also provide  the technology AND any staff required on New Yr’s Eve to help the evening run smoothly.

You've emphasised that priced ticketing is not a profit led initiative so surely this is an offer you can’t refuse?

We – and the undersigned - look forward to hearing your response.

Responded
Dear Ms Lawrence Thank you for your email and the petition submitted on the change.org website about London’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks event. We are grateful to Billetto for their offer, but having discussed it with them recently it is clear that they would not be able to provide for free, the type of ticketing and additional infrastructure which this scale of event requires. Billetto have offered to provide a free online, eticket system however for this kind of event printed tickets with the latest holographic safety marks are required to ensure we do not exceed capacity due to fraudulent copying of tickets. Billetto confirmed that there would be a charge to do this which they would not be able to cover. Regardless of the NYE Fireworks being a ‘paid for ticket’ or ‘free ticket’ event it still requires a range of infrastructure and support to be in place to manage ticketed viewing areas, which Billetto would not be able to provide. No profit is being made from the £10 administration fee; it covers the costs associated with running the ticketing system including additional infrastructure such as fencing, toilets, stewards, ticket collection booth, ticket stewarding, scanning equipment etc. The £10 price means that the move to ticketing is self-funding, meaning the taxpayer will not foot the additional costs. The aim of ticketing this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks event is to ensure the event is safe and enjoyable for everyone attending by reducing numbers. Although Billetto’s offer is very generous it unfortunately does not meet the requirements of the event and therefore we are unable to work with them on this occasion. Yours sincerely Events for London Greater London Authority
