SHUT DOWN DR.BROWN

The Issue

I’ve thought about how to say this time and time again. It’s been a few months since I worked at The Dog and Cat clinic and Laser Center located on E. Kings in Shreveport, La and I decided it’s my moral obligation to speak up.

Working there was genuinely traumatizing and when I say that, I’m not being dramatic. It changed what I wanted to do with my life. Dogs were not treated how they should be and along the lines of cats, it’s worse.

There were rats in the ceiling and mold in the bath area. As normal people know what comes with mice is fecal matter and urine that happens to cover everything in the back bath area and attic. We had several bags of dog food chewed open and destroyed because of the rats. You could hear them running through the ceilings and there was a few times where one would die in the ceiling and we would have to hunt it down to stop the smell when it is decaying.

We would reuse needles and the ways we would “clean” them is we would rinse them out with dawn soapy water and then put them in an autoclave for them to be sterilized. When Covid started Dr.Brown told us we were not allowed to throw away any of the needles because as she said money doesn’t grow on trees. There would be needles that were covered in old medicine and blood that we could not get off and she still would not allow us to throw them away and say figure it out.

When it comes to cleaning anyone who walks in their notices the smell. The employees try to keep it clean but when provided with lack of supplies it’s hard to maintain a facility. There were times when I would buy Fabuloso just so we could mop the floor and have it smells slightly better.

When it comes to x-rays don’t even bother paying for one. We would have to hand develop them which is honestly insane it’s 2020. No one, that I’ve spoken with, even knows how to develop them much less knows somewhere else that does this. When you have to develop x-rays the images come out extremely blurry meaning when trying to diagnose it’s all a guess.

The floor in the kennel area is completely destroyed and has cracks that holds feces and urine. Its extremely hard to clean almost impossible.

Puppies that come in with Parvo were treated pretty much like any other dog. They are put in the same area as all the other dogs, which if you have any knowledge of parvo you know it’s extremely contagious. (Also cats and dogs are right next to each other mixed in with sick and boarding animals.)

There’s also a shed That small dogs can crawl under and behind. We had several incidents where we had to physically pull a dog out from under it.

On holidays Dr.Brown would overbook the kennel. She uses pop-up kennels in the back to make up for the room that we lacked. She would have us stack the dogs on top of one another, literally on top of each kennel for them to board.

With all this being said you’re probably going to wonder why I worked there for two years if it was so bad. I just want to let you know I’m the type of person that wants to help and I thought that I could actually help those animals and in the long run I figured you can’t fix a corrupt facility unless you own it.
