The owner of the Roxy Theatre, K Capital, has lodged a fresh Development Application for the Roxy to be converted to a hospitality venue. This is in direct conflict with the Roxy’s multiple Heritage classifications, and with the NSW Government’s commitment to acquire and restore the Roxy to its original state as a performing arts venue.
The plans include the demolition of the rear end of the building that comprises the original stage and proscenium arch.
The owner has consistently claimed that the Roxy will be restored, but this is referring only to the upstairs Dress Circle, which accounts for only a third of the Roxy’s original seating capacity. The downstairs Stalls and stage area will be lost forever.
The plans show a stage and some back of house provisions as part of the Dress Circle space, but these are token spaces that would incline a layperson to think that the Roxy is being restored. In fact the stage is only large enough to accommodate a standup comedian or rock band, it certainly will not be large enough for an orchestra or stage production of any kind.
