Screen The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut

The Issue

The Thief and the Cobbler is the best animated movie you’ve never seen. The brainchild of brilliant Academy Award-winning animator Richard Williams, The Thief and the Cobbler is a masterfully animated and majestically beautiful film inspired by the Arabian Nights folklore, surrealism, and Middle Eastern art. A harrowing yet simple tale of adventure set to the themes of good vs. evil, fate vs. circumstance, and general cartoonish mayhem, The Thief and the Cobbler is simply an astounding cinematic experience to behold.

Production began in 1964 and continued for the better part of 30 years, before being taken away from its director in 1992 due to Hollywood politics and the impending release of the similarly-themed Aladdin. The film was then re-edited and re-dubbed by financiers and released into theaters in 1995 as Arabian Knight, where it became a critical and commercial failure. For a while, it seemed the fate of this once ambitious film was sealed.

Fast forward to 2006: a devoted fan named Garrett Gilchrist finishes compiling all of the lost animation and dialogue recordings from the original footage to create The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut, a loving tribute to what this epic film originally would have been. As of now, it stands as the closest anyone has ever come to executing the director’s original vision in a fully realized way.

We are going to submit this petition to THE LOFT CINEMA in Tucson, Arizona in the effort to show them there is sufficient interest in a theatrical screening of The Recobbled Cut! The film is a long-lost animated classic, and simply deserves to be screened for a theatrical audience, as it was originally intended. The public also deserves to see this movie as it was originally intended, and a theatrical screening of The Recobbled Cut will spread awareness of this film and its story, and hopefully, encourage people to demand the completion and release of this great film in its appropriate form. If you are a fan of movies, animation, or animated movies, and are interested in preserving the heritage of an infamous work of cinematic art, then we implore you to please sign this petition as a means of getting this movie on the big screen where it truly belongs!
