In the U.S. government, there are agencies to protect the people from huge companies. This, however, isn’t happening anymore. These agencies have been captured by the companies they are supposed to regulate, allowing the companies free reign over the U.S. These companies no longer have to worry about whether or not their actions are legal and safe. The companies capture the support of their regulators with the promise of jobs and money. Many former employees go work in the government, aiding the companies with tax breaks and bills in their favour. This is a huge problem, and the only way to stop it is to create a new law that prohibits former employees of regulated companies going to the government agency that regulates them, and that prohibits moving from a regulating government agency to the company it regulates. If we do this, regulatory capture is sure to stop. The reason why this hasn’t happened is that many former employees of the company work in the government, passing laws in their favour. However, with the support of its citizens, America will break through this barrier, and the government agencies will work for the people once again. By petitioning, we can make a difference.
