The Issue

To the Honorable Fruitport Township Board,

We, the undersigned residents of Fruitport Township, Muskegon, and surrounding communities, respectfully submit this petition to urge your consideration and support for the redevelopment of The Lakes Mall property into a multifaceted community asset, comprising a modern hospital facility and affordable, income- or HUD-based, non-age-restricted apartments. This proposal addresses critical needs within our region, specifically the demand for accessible healthcare and housing options.

The Lakes Mall has served our community for years but is now in a state of decline. Repurposing this space can revitalize the area and offer much-needed resources to the residents of Muskegon and Fruitport. A modern hospital facility will ensure that healthcare services are more accessible, reducing travel time for emergency and specialized medical services. Given the increasing healthcare needs with population growth, this is a vital development.

In addition to healthcare, affordable housing is a continuous concern for many residents. The region needs affordable and non-age-restricted apartments to accommodate individuals and families, providing stability and fostering a thriving community. Implementing income- or HUD-based apartments ensures housing opportunities for all, contributing to the social and economic diversity of our community.

Redeveloping The Lakes Mall is more than a construction project; it's a step towards economic revitalization, improved quality of life, and a stronger, healthier community. We believe this initiative supports the broader strategic goals of revitalizing our region while meeting the practical needs of its residents.

We urge the Fruitport Township Board to consider this redevelopment not simply as an investment in infrastructure but as a commitment to the community's well-being and future. Please join us in making this vision a reality by signing this petition.
