On the 17th March 2017 my brother Joseph Mateo died by suicide. The effect and impact to not only my family but the community has been devastating. My brother Joseph is an artistic and creative soul, he stood tall and fought raging against what would have seemed like thousands all on his own, now is the chance for all of us to be there for Joseph. To show our support and fight the battle with him.
A loving family friend in Orange has written to Orange City Council to request that Edye Park in Glenroi, be renamed the Joseph Mateo Memorial Park and that we can have a small monument erected to memorialise those lives lost from suicide, but also to create awareness of youth suicide and prevention in the community.
Although my brother lost his battle to the darkness that is depression, I want to make sure that he is remembered as a hero, his memory is honoured and that people know behind the face of every victim to suicide there are people who care, people who want to stand together and fight to raise awareness, fight for prevention and save our youths.
Joseph's death has effected the youth population in Orange. Growing up in the Gelnroi community, a community rich with diversity and culture, childhood friendships become that of an almost sibling nature and friends soon become family. To have a place where Joseph's mates and family can go to honour his memory and create awareness of suicide prevention will have an incredible impact on the healing process for everyone.
