THANK YOU! My comment to the NYT article about Prime Minister’s Abe’s upcoming speech to Congress received 98 likes, driving this comment to the top of the list of Reader Recommends. While China and South Korea may be vocal about wanting Japan to show remorse instead of repeated denials of war crimes such as the use of comfort women (scorned even by our very own Speaker of the House, John Boehner), THE 4 MILLION VICTIMS OF THE DUTCH EAST INDIES SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN OR MARGINALIZED. Because the colony is no more and because the governments of neither Indonesia nor the Netherlands have been strong champions of the war victims in Indonesia, we are on our own. Enter THE INDO PROJECT (www.theindoproject.org). We represent Indo Dutch, Indo Chinese, Dutch and all nationalities who once made the Dutch East Indies their home. Unlike Germany, Japan’s past apologies are a mile wide and an inch deep. We at The Indo Project cannot and will not turn the page unless Japan owns up to the truth about the war and teaches subsequent generations that yes, Japan was a victim of the atomic bombs… because it started a systematic war of murder, torture, rape, starvation, medical experiments and genocide. Germany was forced and did the utmost to come clean. Japan and Hirohito received a different treatment from the Allies and this show of mercy was exploited to falsify the historical records for generations to come and shirk any form of responsibility of the hurt and trauma the survivors have been burdened with until their dying day. While Abe and his conservative allies may be thinking they are washing their hands in innocence, they are washing their hands in blood if they will not accept and acknowledge the truth. Make no mistake about it: we are not anti-Japan. We love Japan for many reasons and believe in the Japanese heroes who signed our petition to show the war movie UNBROKEN in Japan (still banned). Supposedly, Japan is an enlightened democracy, but when facts about the war are continuously censored, the Western world should ask itself what other things Japan censors or won’t share with us. We know Japan can do better. And Japan will, if they join us in a comprehensive effort of TRUTH, APOLOGY and RECONCILIATION. We are ready for it. Are you, Mr. Abe?!
