Rent reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic

Rent reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic
The Issue
The Irvine Company recently offered residential tenants the ability to defer a portion of their monthly rent payments during the months of April and May in response to the novel COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, many Irvine Company residents are going to struggle to make this month's rent and future months for an indefinite amount of time. For those who have lost their jobs during these unsettling times and do not know when they will be able to find work again, deferring a portion of their rent for a two month period is NOT enough. Emergency funds will only last so long. The Irvine Company needs to do more and offer tenants a real solution by offering an actual reduction in rent. As a company that provides people with a place to live, it's important to remember that housing is a basic and essential humanitarian right. During these challenging times, the Irvine Company needs to rise to the occasion and put the needs of its residents first by reducing the amount of rent for tenants who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
