The immediate release of Michael Walter Williams

The Issue

Michael Walter Williams was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defending himself on his own property in Owassa, Alabama. Fourteen years ago, two people from Brewton, Alabama ( Dennis & Donna Smith ) who were well over the legal blood alcohol level ( tested by the coroner ) drove forty miles to Michael's home. Michael greeted the pair with kindness when they arrived and extended a hand shake. The hand shake, not being reciprocated, was instead met by violence. Michael was severely beaten on the ground in front of his residence and found himself staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. Michael, while bleeding profusely, announced once again for them to leave his home as he staggered to reach for his own gun. Dennis did not listen and continued to hold his gun to Micheal.

This is where Michael decided, in the heat of moment, to protect his own life on his own property. Michael was railroaded by the court system who saw nothing but a murderer, and not a man who had to fight for his life fourteen years ago on November 8th 2008 in his own front yard from two individuals that had no business driving forty miles intoxicated with several different loaded guns in their vehicle. We, Michael's family, come to everyone with this petition so we can show the parole board in Montgomery, AL that Michael has lost enough of his life to prison and that he never should have been there in the first place for defending himself.

Every Alabamian should have the right to defend themselves on their own property, but we were shown on April 7th 2011, when Michael was convicted and sentenced to 20 years, that was not the case for Alabama residents.  Michael has missed his own son growing up, as well as all of his nieces and nephews. Michael has shown great remorse in the actions he had to take to defend himself. He wishes everyday it did not happen and feels as though he lost a part of his soul having to take the lives of two individuals that fateful night. We, as the family of Michael, acknowledge this is a cruel world we live in and any life taken is a stain on humanity. We cannot change the past and those that are lost are lost forever. But, we can strive to do better and set better examples for those that come after us. Please sign and share and help Micheal return home fourteen years later.
