Shark finning is the practice of cutting off a shark's dorsal fin so that people can use it for shark fin soup or other "delicacies". The sharks are often still alive while their fins are cut off with no regard to their pain. They are then tossed back into the ocean where, bleeding and in pain, they either suffocate from lack of mobility or are eaten by other sea predators.
Shark populations have been decimated by finning and many species are nearing extinction. Ecosystems are being upset by the lack of sharks in their waters and we are coming dangerously close to no longer having these beautiful creatures in continued decades.
We are calling for the Idaho State Senate to pass legislation that bans the sale, dsitribution, trade and possession of shark fins. The other West coast states have all passed legislation against shark fins, including Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and California. We want Idaho to join the West coast in becoming more compassionate, thoughtful and responsible in regards to how we treat sharks and the consumption of shark fins.
