The deferral of changes to the close contact testing/tracing system in Schools/childcare
The Issue
The recent reopening of schools in Ireland has seen a huge increase in the incidence rates in children especially primary school children with rates now standing way above the rest at between 700/800 per 100k and still increasing. Last week there was 90 outbreaks with 78 of these in primary schools with over 400 linked cases of transmission but these figures are artificially lower than the real numbers as due to delays in the contact tracing system which is again under pressure and unable to perform, parents awaiting contact from HSE have used walk in testing as a means to test there children. With flawed data and huge numbers increasing this move to remove the close contact testing while no symptoms is wrong. More time is needed to ascertain real numbers and a grasp at what is happening in our schools but removing these measures leaves our schools open to massive outbreaks. These measures were not to be relaxed unless proven that there was no spike in infections which is clear and evident now even with lower numbers that the rates are increasing even in other age groups and jeopardise’s the safety and well being of our children who have already suffered enough.
