February, 12 2022 BLOCKING HR6600 FOR FLOOR VOTE AT U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

The Issue

RE: BLOCKING HR6600 FOR FLOOR VOTE AT U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Ethiopian American Civic Council (EACC) hereby protest and stand to oppose the fundamental premise of HR6600 stating, “gross violations of internationally recognized human rights, war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and other atrocities in Ethiopia.”

The resolution side steps the following key elements in evaluating the current crisis, which subsequently will fall short to bring about stability, peace, and Democracy in Ethiopia:

1.            Ignores TPLF initial attack on Ethiopian Defense Forces which launched the current crisis

2.            Ignores TPLF invasion of the Amhara and Afar regions

3.            Omits TPLF large scale Human Right Violation in Mai Kadra, Amhara and Afar regions

4.            Ignores widespread destruction of Schools and Health Centers in Amhara and Afar regions

5.            Ignores the use of Child Soldiers by TPLF

6.            Ignores Ethiopia’s genuine effort to comply to International Human Right recommendations

7.            Ignores Peace and Reconciliation effort currently undergoing

8.            Incorporates bogus claim of ‘Genocide in Ethiopia’

9.            Allows illicit funds by TPLF to be used in fanning the flame of war throughout Ethiopia

10.         Fails to demand TPLF to cease hostility and disarm.

EACC rejects HR6600, an untimely House Resolution which failed to address the root cause of the conflict nor contribute tangible mechanism to bring the conflict to amicable end. Instead, EACC recommends giving more time for the recent diplomatic approach of  ‘Constructive Engagement’ advanced by the president.

Therefore, EACC request the Honorable Speaker Nancy Pelosi not to allow HR6600 for floor vote at U.S. House of Representatives.

Sincerely,
