We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you nominate US Representative John Lewis of Georgia for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
From his days as a college student, Rep. Lewis has been an advocate for equal rights, justice and peace, using non-violent methods to fight for the dignity of all human beings. This has been his touchstone as a private citizen and as a public figure. For 56 years, that cause has been the driving force of his life. Today, at the age of 76, he is still at the forefront of the leadership for equality, justice and peace and has rightfully earned the title 'The Conscience of Congress.'
Threats, arrests and beatings did not deter him from furthering those goals in a non-violent manner. As the last living member of the 'Big Six' of the early civil rights movement in the US, he has never lost sight of his purpose and the means to achieve it.
For these reasons, we ask that Rep. John Lewis be recognized for six decades of peacefully advancing the cause of equality and justice for all.
