We are asking for your support in the transfer of management of the western portion of the State-owned lands surrounding the former McGregor Prison, including Grant's Cottage Historic site, to the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, as an addition to Moreau State Park.

Heritage and adventure tourism is a major part of Saratoga County’s economy and accounts for its attractiveness as a great place to live, visit, or work. Moreau Lake State Park is a popular destination for hiking, swimming, kayaking, athletic events, camping, hunting, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, geocaching, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding, and attracts over 400,000 visitors each year. Lake Bonita and the surrounding woodlands offer additional opportunities to expand trails and backcountry cabin, lean-to and tent camping accommodations to serve even more adventurers.

In the latest (2009) NYS Open Space Plan and the 2006 Saratoga County Green Infrastructure Plan, the Southeastern Adirondack Foothills, which includes the Palmertown Range and the Kayaderosseras Creek watershed, were identified as conservation priorities.

Beautiful woodlands to visit, hike, camp, snowmobile, and pursue other outdoor activities are one of NY’s greatest assets and are increasingly sought-after by health-conscious tourists, local residents and high tech companies looking for a location for their employees. The National Realtors Association reports that access to nearby trail systems is a community amenity desired by home buyers, second only to good schools.

The expanded trail system that would result from expanding the state park would serve park visitors and provide a critical link for the trail network being planned in Saratoga County as part of the Palmertown Trail (our “Alternative Northway”), linking Moreau Lake State Park with Lincoln State Forest and the Saratoga Spa State Park, and providing opportunities for recreation as well as off-road transportation.

Thank you for supporting this effort as you consider options for the McGregor Prison and the surrounding lands owned by New York State.
