Well it is time to claim an official victory! Western Australia now has secondary supply legislation. This legislation came into effect on November 20, 2015. These laws ban adults from supplying alcohol to children in a private setting without the consent of their parents. The maximum penalty is $10,000. The timing of this was just before Leavers in WA and it certainly generated a lot of chat amongst parents about how the subject of alcohol and supply was going to be navigated, in particular because this cohort of Leavers had many more 18 year olds than in previous years. For more information please see the Government of Western Australia’s media release: https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/Pages/Barnett/2015/11/Parents-empowered-by-secondary-supply-laws.aspx Also if you are interested please check out the Alcohol Think Again campaign on secondary supply laws: http://alcoholthinkagain.com.au/Parents-Young-People/Young-People-and-Alcohol-Laws Finally a piece on Grog Watch by the Australian Drug Foundation: http://grogwatch.adf.org.au/2014/11/was-samantha-menezes-secondary-supply-laws-success-at-last/ I would like to thank each and every one of you for signing the petition way back in 2013 and for your ongoing support throughout the process of getting such legislation passed through Government. I am still very passionate about reducing harm from alcohol to young people. My main concerns include alcohol advertising in sport, on public transport and bus stops, as well as on social media platforms allowing 13 year olds to join (Instagram). I am also very passionate about educating parents and other adults about the reasons why it is not recommended that young people consume alcohol under 18. This is an area I would love to spend more time on. Access to alcohol whilst underage is still of concern and I am also interested in the WA ‘s Independent Liquor Review Committee’s recommendation about the introduction of controlled purchase operations. For more information on controlled purchase operations please view the Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan’s blog: https://www.police.wa.gov.au/About-Us/Our-agency/Commissioner-of-the-WA-Police/What-really-matters/Liquor-compliance If you would like to keep in touch regarding reducing harm from alcohol to young people please “Like” my Introduce Secondary Supply Laws Facebook page and you can also follow me on Twitter. https://www.facebook.com/IntroduceSecondarySupplyLawsInWa/ https://twitter.com/Sammenez Yours Sincerely, Samantha Menezes
