Dear “Introduce secondary supply legislation in WA” petition signers, Today I received a letter from Hon Colin Holt MLC, Minister for Housing; Racing and Gaming regarding the introduction of secondary supply laws into WA. Minister Holt said “it is anticipated they will be introduced into Parliament during the autumn session”. I look forward to this legislation coming into WA before Leavers 2015. This is at a time when many of this year’s school leavers group will be 18 years of age. I am hoping this legislation really opens up channels of dialogue between parents and young people. I am also hoping young people will become more aware of the consequences of supplying alcohol to a younger friend. It’s not just about the law; it’s about the continued education our young people receive about the choices they can make in situations such as Leavers and other gatherings. It’s about changing the normalisation of alcohol in our community. Minister Holt has assured me that the WA Government “is committed to minimising harm due to the use of liquor”. Given that secondary supply legislation is only part of a comprehensive approach to reducing harm from alcohol to young people, I look forward to much debate about other measures that will help reduce alcohol related harms.
