Australians with aHUS forced to stop the life-saving drug Soliris to "see what happens!"
The Issue
Two years ago in December 2014, the Australian government finally decided to make Soliris (Eculizmuab) available to patients with the life-threatening disease Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome (aHUS). aHUS is an ultra-rare life-threatening blood disease that can damage major organs like the kidneys, heart, brain, and can even cause death.
Now these patients will be required to come off this life-saving drug in December 2016 to “see what happens”. The Australian government is going to gamble with their lives hoping to not have to pay for this expensive drug. There is no cure for aHUS! What is likely to happen is these patients will relapse causing further kidney damage or worse. These patients will end up on dialysis and they could even lose their lives.
Medical decisions should not be made by the government. They should be made between the doctors and the patients. Decisions like this by government are very dangerous. You can make a difference and help save lives!
Please sign this petition telling Sussan Ley MP, Minister of Health in Australia, and Professor Andrew Wilson, Chair of the PBAC, that they should not stop access to Soliris for those patients in Australia with aHUS.
