In February this year, we received reports about a kangaroo in the Templestowe area that had been shot with an arrow through the back of the head. The kangaroo was still mobile but the injury would have been causing the innocent animal immense pain. What’s even more heartbreaking is the kangaroo had an “at-foot” joey with her.
Wildlife Victoria coordinated a group of volunteers to locate the kangaroo but, after days of searching, we received another distressing report of a kangaroo in the same area who had also been shot with an arrow. With Wildlife Victoria volunteers hot on the case, the team were able to dart her to examine the extent of her injuries. Unfortunately, the arrow had caused serious damage to the kangaroo’s head and it was with a heavy heart that the decision was made to euthanise her.
What was even more devastating was that this wasn’t the same kangaroo from the original report. She was also carrying a joey but it was a very tiny pinkie who wouldn’t survive without its mother. Two lives were lost that day because of a disgusting act of cruelty towards a harmless native animal.
The original kangaroo has still not been found but it is suspected she had succumb to her injuries and is hidden within the dense bushland in the area.
Over the past year, 297 animals have been reported to Wildlife Victoria suffering from despicable acts of cruelty.
People wanting to inflict pain and suffering on innocent animals are doing so right on our very doorstep.
297 cruel acts is 297 too many.
Please don’t let these beautiful animals die in vain. Together, we can ensure that the welfare of our native wildlife is a priority for State government and justice is sought for malicious acts of cruelty towards our vulnerable wildlife.
Our native wildlife are supposed to be protected and while Wildlife Victoria is doing everything we can to respond to animals that are suffering, the State Government is doing little to ensure that our wildlife are safe - by signing the petition, we will be letting them know that we do care and that wildlife in the wild do matter!
Sign the petition and let The Hon. Lisa Neville, Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water, know that you want the welfare of our iconic native wildlife on the Victorian Governments agenda.
