Say no to the massive Mercer County Community College solar facility

Say no to the massive Mercer County Community College solar facility
The Issue
We want Mercer County and West Windsor to preserve its open space, not replace historic farmland with for-profit industrial use. Mercer County Community College is leasing out 67 acres of farmland - zoned for educational use - for a $35 million power generation facility. This kind of project belongs in an industrial zone, not in a residential neighborhood or on land zoned for education. This will be built out within less than 100 yards of people's homes and alongside Mercer County Park. SunLight General Capital, the company that will lease and operate the facility, seeks to make a profit from selling electricity back to the school and from selling solar renewable energy credits to the state. Yet West Windsor and its residents lose beautiful open space farmland to an eyesore of a facility, with unknown health effects to the families living nearby. And if SunLight General fails? The bond offering includes a "county guaranty' under which taxpayers would be on the hook for nearly $30 million. The project will include some 40,000 solar panels, 17 inverters, 8 foot chain link fencing. This is the farmland alongside Mercer County Community College, bordering Mercer County Park and the homes on South Post Rd and Old Trenton Rd. Deer and other wildlife that regularly migrate through Mercer County Park into this field to graze will be funneled right into the fast moving traffic on Old Trenton Road. The area includes more than 20 acres of wetlands, which we need to protect, along with the beautiful animals that inhabit the surrounding area. This project will include cutting down over 130 trees, many of which are loaded with wildlife and the rich ecosystems that always border farmland. We see falcons, owls, hawks, hummingbirds, blue jays, cardinals and finches flying around this farm. If you care about open space and preserving farms and trees in Central New Jersey, sign the petition and share it with others. ALSO attend the Town Hall meeting on May 24, at the West Windsor Municipal Complex. See the details at www.SmarterSolarNJ.com.
