While this legislation is called the “All Students Count Act”, yet its sole purpose is to subdivide the tiny Asian population in Rhode Island (3.6%) into many even smaller subgroups by ethnic origin. This act has no mention of the equally if not more diverse nature of the rest 96% of the population. Why single out only the Asian Americans? America’s strength derives from the integration of various backgrounds. Dividing racial or ethnic groups would further divide our state and our nation.

We are also troubled by the hidden agenda of this legislation under the disguise of addressing the diverse needs of Asian Americans. Data collected this way is neither scientific (ethnicities do not equal to national origins) nor accurate (many people are multi-racial); and worse, this data may easily be manipulated to advance public race-based policies that are unfair and unlawful.

Dear fellow Americans, we don’t need more racial cleavages and unnecessary costs to schools and government agencies. United we stand, divided we fall!
