Protect The Health of Bethpage Residents: Remediate the Grumman Toxic Plume
The Issue
Navy/DEC’s Failures regarding the Toxic Catastrophic Plume in Bethpage
o The Toxic plume is now reported to be at least eight (8) square miles – One of the largest in Country and true catastrophe
o Pollution in our drinking water source has endangered human health.
o Navy and DEC have failed at cleaning it up for over 35 years.
o Schumer, Suozzi, King, and Gillibrand all have taken contributions from Northrop Grumman.
Navy’s and DEC’s plan: Leave carcinogens in Bethpage and ignore radioactive material. Forever . Literally.
Our Exposure to Carcinogens:
o 1,4-dioxane a likely human carcinogen has been in our drinking water since at least 2013 and likely for decades at 22 times health standards.
o Our baseball field at the community park where our children played little league and attended summer camp contained carcinogens at unacceptable levels.
o Radon may be in our homes. Radium is in the plume. We don't know where it is. It decays to radon gas which travels upwardly from the ground and into homes and schools. Radon has been found at twice acceptable levels in the elementary school. This must be investigated.
o What else?????
Our Goal: Complete cleanup and protect our health.
Our Demand:
o Don’t allow the Navy & DEC to proceed unchecked for the next 50 years
o Allow the local community to oversee the cleanup - Long Island Pure Water Ltd. is our choice. They have retained experts with over 100 years of experience in this field
o Completely investigate and remediate the plume in Bethpage and surrounding communities.
o LIPW to spearhead a full blown health study of all current and former residents of Bethpage.
o Everything funded by Navy and Grumman
