Jacob Mafume, Mayor of the City of Harare, was arrested on 14 December 2020 facing trumped up charges of interfering with state witnesses and thus breaching his bail conditions for a prior politically motivated  case. He was denied bail at the Magistrates Court on flimsy grounds thus infringing on his fundamental right to a fair trial and also the natural law principle of presumption of innocence until proven guilty. His lawyers appealed to the High Court and his case was heard but the Judge handling the matter reserved the judgement. Mayor Mafume is currently very ill showing symptoms of high fever, chest pains and headache which are also COVID19 symptoms. Zimbabwe's prisons' hospitals have no capacity to provide basic health care and if the Mayor is not released immediately he might lose his life. Mayor Mafume is innocent and he is being persecuted for being a member of the opposition, his case has no merits hence the failure by the prosecution to bring the matter to trial. As citizens we call on the Mnangagwa government to immediately and unconditionally release Mayor Mafume whose health continues to deteriorate.
