Recently the United Kingdom passed legislation that bans gay conversion therapy because of research about the damaging effects it can have on someone who identifies as LGBT+.
Gay conversion therapy can be defined as a service or type of therapy that tries to change one's sexuality- mostly held by religious groups. Christian rock singer/songwriter/theologian Vicky Beeching from the UK (who has performed at Youth Convention concerts in Newfoundland in the past) recently wrote a tell-all book called "Undivided". At the age of only 16, Vicky writes in her book the story of having an "exorcism" performed on her at a Christian event to try and convert her sexuality. She came out as a lesbian back in 2014 at age 35.
Conversion therapy on LGBT+ individuals can lead to self esteem issues, feeling shame and guilt of who they are, self harm, suicidal ideations, and can possibly lead to suicide. It is still legal in Newfoundland and Labrador. This needs to change.
Please join me in my plea to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to ban gay conversion therapy. Let's make our province more inclusive and let the LGBT+ community know that they are accepted for who they are.
