Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Suspend all trade with Chile NOW

The Issue

Right now in areas of Chile such as Petorca, people are being exploited and having their human rights infringed upon by state sponsored privatization of native land and water in order to sustain the gross Hass Avocado industry. This has led to people being left in drought and hunger due to intimidation and abuse by their own government and the private corporations which it supports.

Ireland has long been hailed as a champion of human rights, in our neutrality and our culture as a whole. It is for this reason that Ireland must stick up for the resilient people of Chile, when nobody else will. Ireland can take this opportunity to prove herself as a trailblazer in development of human rights.

In 2015, total trade between Chile and Ireland totaled €252 million Euros. Ireland's main exports to Chile include cranes, computers, medicine and industrial oil and alcohol. We call on the government, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to engage in cross party discussion on the matter, and to call the bluff of the Chilean government, and, ultimately, suspend all trade between Ireland and Chile until the Chilean government can clean up it's act, and call a halt to the abuse of it's own people.
