Help save the Ganga
Help save the Ganga
The purpose of this petition is to convince the government to create stricter laws surrounding the pollution of the Ganga, the use of groundwater and river water near the Ganga's vicinity, and the industries operating near the Ganga
The Ganga is one of the most sacred rivers to the Indian people. Around 400 million people live in the basin of the river, the Ganga offers a livelihood to people, and the Ganga is by far the most popular site for religious pilgrimage in India. It’s not just that though, the Ganga is one of the most fertile regions on the planet and acts as a home for two of the most endangered animals today: the Gharial and the Ganges river dolphin. It’s safe to say that the Ganga is the most iconic and important river to India. But current statistics show startling problems with the river. Since 1984, the Ganga River has depleted by 44%. There is imminent risk of the monsoon causing the river to flood. Along with that, the levels of pollution in the river is almost unthinkable, the river having “almost 3000 times over the limit suggested by the WHO as 'safe'”, and the river water itself being declared “unfit to drink”. The river is also the reason for around 20% of disease in Uttar Pradesh, which is… shocking, to say the least.
Pollution is the biggest issue that the Ganga is facing right now. In 2007, the Ganga was declared one of the top 5 most polluted rivers in a world. And although improvements have been made since then, we need to solve the problem faster. That’s why I need your signature. Your signature will contribute to the making of stricter waste dumping laws in the Ganga. Your signature will motivate the Indian Government and its people to innovate and create interesting solutions for the Ganga. Your signature will help the 200 Gharials and the 2000 Ganges dolphins that live in the Ganga today. Your signature... will save the Ganga.
So please, give me your signature.
