Save the Bees!

Hello everyone,

Hopefully this petition finds you safe and healthy during this pandemic. COVID-19 is very serious and has been on all of our minds constantly since it began spreading. In uncertain times like these, we can't forget about other important things happening in our world. The Honeybee (Apis mellifera) still needs our help! The species is responsible for the pollination of the crops that feed us. With warmer weather around the corner and our farmers working as hard as they can to keep our produce shelves stocked, we need to help out our pollinators.

Please sign this petition to help show Marie-Claude Bibeau, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, as well as the Government of Canada that honeybees are extremely important in our lives and need saving! I believe more conservation areas should be implemented with a ban on pesticide use. Pesticides are extremely harmful to the bees and are the leading cause of bee decline due to human interference. The government has put restrictions on certain pesticides used that are known to be harmful to honeybees, but they plan to phase them out over a few years. Areas with a ban on these pesticides are crucial because the bees need our help immediately, they can't wait! To enhance the areas specifically catered to bees, wildflowers should be planted in large quantities. They need the pollen to carry out their role in the colony as well as support our agriculture. Honeybee populations in recent years have been at an all-time low, putting the species at risk of extinction if there are no further actions to support them. In 2018, Canada lost 30% of its managed honeybee colonies in a single winter.

Many may not know, but honeybees are responsible for one third of the foods that make up our diet. Canadian farmers rely on the honeybees in order to make a living and the general population relies on them to enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables we get to eat.

Collectively, we can demonstrate the need for a safe environment for honeybees to flourish and grow as a species. As individuals, you can do your part by planting wildflower seeds in your own gardens!

These pollinators need our help! Let's show them that they can rely on us to provide them with a stable environment as much as we rely on them to provide us with 1 out of every 3 bites of food we take.

Thank you! :)
