Fish and Seafood products imported from Vietnam-Major Safety Concern

Between April 6th and April 18th, massive dead fish started to be washed up on the beach from 4 providences in central Vietnam, including Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. The cause of this catastrophe remains unknown until today. There were no words from the Vietnam official, although there was a speculation that a steel plant built by the Taiwanese-Formosa Plastics Corp. is responsible for discharging the waste to the ocean through illegal pipes.
In September 29th, 2009 Formosa Plastics Corp., Texas, and Formosa Plastics Corp., Louisiana were ordered to pay a civil penalty of $2.8 million to resolve violations under the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and they would have to spend more than $10 million on pollution controls to address air, water, and hazardous waste violations at two petrochemical plants in Point Comfort, Texas, and Baton Rouge, La., the Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced in 2009.
With Formosa Plastics Corp. poor tracking records on the environment, the current massive dead fish in Vietnam, and while we are waiting for the answers, the Vietnamese American community urges the FDA to step up and take extra effort to thoroughly test and inspect all sea food and fish products that are currently imported from Vietnam. This is necessary to ensure food safety and safety of the American people. Over 90% of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported from other countries around the world and Vietnam is among the leading foreign suppliers of seafood products to the U.S. in 2014, beside China, Canada, Thailand, Indonesia and Chile, therefore, it is very crucial for the FDA to take extra measures to ensure food safety for the American people.
