We understand that Brazil is facing enormous threats regarding environmental issues. The recent rise of wildfires and deforestation rates, along with the killing of environmentalists and documented dismantling of environmental institutions represent important threats to one of the most culturally and biologically diverse countries in the world. We, as attendees of the 2022 FLARE Network Meeting in Rome, Italy, support Brazilian people in their legitimate struggle for their biocultural heritage. We are members of an independent international community of scientists, managers and practitioners dedicated to understanding forest and human livelihood relationships. We celebrate Brazilian democracy as one of the largest in the world and we are confident that Brazilian society wants to defend its forests and forest peoples. We also clearly recognize two main opposite political projects for the environmental area in Brazil. One is represented by the current national government that has accumulated a shameful record of science denialism and dismantling of environmental protection. On the other side, there is a broad democratic alliance that includes several former environmental ministries and counts the support of the majority of the academic, social and environmental sectors. We, conference attendees, stand by this broad democratic alliance. We express hope that results from the upcoming election are respected and Brazil recovers its leading position in the international environmental arena.
