THE FACE OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BARBADOS

THE FACE OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BARBADOS
Why this petition matters
WE THE UNDERSIGNED DEMAND WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF BARBADOS VIA THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, ENFORCES THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS ACT CAP 144A.
In 2018, the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, QC MP, in the Barbados Labour Party Manifesto, in relation to animal welfare stated the following – “The Barbados Labour Party’s pledge to create a more caring society encompasses your role as advocates and protectors of society’s vulnerable and voiceless animals. The BLP commits to listening to your concerns and challenges and to working with you to develop measures that will make it easier for you to perform your role in making the lives of animals across Barbados better.”
However, due to the lack of enforcement of our animal protection laws, this is the reality:
- Each day dogs and cats are found on the streets in the most deplorable conditions.
- Their abuse includes being thrown down wells, starved, poisoned, and neglected.
- Shelters are called out regularly to retrieve surrendered dogs in the worst conditions, such as infested with maggots, starving to death, chains grown into their neck, cutlass wounds on their body, and burns to their skin.
- Dogs are indiscriminately and irresponsibly bred for money, or just simply allowed to breed, leading to overpopulation and diseases.
- Dog and cock fighting continues on a regular basis and the organized crime that goes with these activities prevents well-intentioned people from coming forward due to fear of threats and repercussions.
- Horses and livestock experience extreme cruelty and suffer from conditions such as dehydration and emaciation due to poor nutrition.
- Cats are regularly poisoned due to overpopulation; are perceived as a nuisance and become roadkill. Cats also live in large colonies where disease spreads rapidly among them.
All of this continues because our animal protection legislation is not enforced.
The world is watching.
We want commitment NOW with Standard Operating Procedures implemented for all those who are authorised to enforce Barbados Animal Protection Laws.
