Whereas MLA resolution 2012-1 affirms that academics involved in social justice movements should not fear reprisals,
Whereas academic organizations and scholars endorsing an academic boycott of Israeli institutions have faced acts of harassment, intimidation and retaliation,
Whereas an Emergency Resolution presented to the Delegate Assembly on January 11, 2014 by the Radical Caucus asked the MLA to reaffirm its belief that scholars involved in social justice movements should not fear reprisals,
Whereas the Executive Committee at that meeting publicly stated that it found that the resolution raised important issues worthy of its consideration,
We urge the Executive Committee to issue a statement against acts of retaliation, intimidation, coercion aimed at students, faculty, academic organizations because of their political opinions and/or activism.
Such acts include but are not restricted to:
Interfering with or harming a student’s grades or other forms of evaluation, access to mentoring and advising, fellowship or employment support, career support;
Interfering with or harming a faculty member’s chances for employment, promotion, tenure, merit increases in salary, or their access to material support;
University administrators unilaterally ending an academic unit’s connection with an academic organization;
State legislative bodies threatening to cut funding for institutions or programs on the basis of their political beliefs or associations, or demanding that they end such associations.
