The Emergency is Tonight! Stop the criminalization of unhoused people in New Haven.

The Issue

UNHOUSED PEOPLE DEMAND THAT YOU RESPECT OUR RIGHT TO BE IN PUBLIC SPACE.

We are the Unhoused Activists Community Team (U-ACT), a group of unhoused New Haven residents and the our housed allies.  We are fed up with being CRIMINALIZED for simply living our lives in a city that does not provide places to do the things that everyone else takes for granted.

We call on Mayor Justin Elicker to address our very reasonable demands:

  1. NO EVICTIONS FROM ENCAMPMENTS ON PUBLIC LAND without 10 business days notice and a publicly-monitored process that guarantees immediate alternative housing. No police involvement in evictions except as a last resort.
  2. DO NOT THROW AWAY THE STUFF THAT BELONGS TO US. Store belongings for no less than 60 days after an eviction from an encampment and replace any lost or thrown away belongings. Free secure PUBLIC STORAGE LOCKERS at an accessible location downtown.
  3. PERMANENT, WELL-MAINTAINED PUBLIC RESTROOMS FOR ALL, including 24-hour access across the city, starting with downtown and Fair Haven. No criminal charges for public urination or defecation until this demand is met.
  4. FREE, PERMANENT PUBLIC SHOWERS with reasonable hours in a clean, safe facility.

Tell the City of New Haven to stop evicting, hassling, and arresting unhoused people for exercising OUR HUMAN RIGHT TO USE PUBLIC SPACE.
