Currently The Eden Project in Cornwall does not back up its environmental message with the food it offers on site.

Media sources online, on TV, scientific magazines and in the newspapers tell us that the production of meat for human consumption has a huge environmental impact on the Earth, using much more water per kilo to produce than the same weight in grains, fruits and vegetables.

Not all sources will tell you about the cruelty inherent in all, not just intensive animal farming and slaughtering methods, but it is clear that there is no such thing as humane meat production. (Dictionary definition of humane: adjective -characterized by tenderness, compassion, and sympathy for people and animals, especially for the suffering or distressed)

I could also mention here the massive negative effect that eating meat and dairy has on our own health, costing huge amounts of money to the NHS every year in dealing with meat eating related diseases such as heart disease and cancers such as colon cancer.

I and others believe that The Eden Project in Cornwall should be leading the way in offering imaginative, interesting and mouthwatering vegan food as standard fare, with offerings ranging from simple snacks to starters, main courses and delicious puddings, Farm to plate miles and carbon footprint details could be detailed on their menus.  Dishes should not have to be listed as specifically "vegan" or "vegetarian"! They are what they are, healthy for us and better for our planet!

Literature explaining the ethical implications of raising animals for human consumption and stating environmental impact with the latest proper facts and figures should be available in their food outlets should anyone query the absence of meat, fish or dairy. Other literature offering information on Earth friendly dishes and dietary tips could also be available. The Eden Project, as Cornwall's conservation and environmental message to the world, can and should showcase a better, more Earth friendly and body friendly way to feed ourselves, and what better place to start than in its own food outlets?

Thank you for reading this – if you agree that The Eden Project should lead by example, please take a moment to sign the petition.
