*There is no fee to sign this petition on Change.org. Signing is completely free. Proposal to reduce the current 45 mph speed limit to 35 mph on Ottawa Beach Road between 160th Ave. and 168th Ave. The need for the speed limit reduction includes: 1) Previously identified safety concerns: The September 2024 Park Township Master Plan mentions concerns about commercial development along Ottawa Beach Road west of 160th Avenue and suggests reducing the speed limit on OBR to address safety issues. 2) The recent Park Township/Ottawa County adoption of a “road diet” between 144th (Division) and 160th Ave. will address some of the speeding concerns for Ottawa Beach Road but does nothing to address the speeding concerns between 160th and 168th. Reducing the speed limit to 35mph at 160th will extend this safety effort. 3) High pedestrian/cyclist activity: The current speed limit of 45 mph creates a hazardous environment for these road users. A speed limit reduction to 35 mph will improve driver reaction time during unexpected movements from pedestrians and cyclists. 4) Enhanced crosswalk safety: There are 9 pedestrian crosswalks between 160th Ave. and Holland State Park. A consistent and lower speed limit would allow for improved driver reaction time and make it safer for pedestrians/cyclists to cross. This is especially relevant given today’s increase in vehicle size and their ability to stop quickly.  5) This two-mile stretch of road includes 74 access points, including streets, private driveways, multiple businesses, parking lots, boat launches, and two busy marinas. Decreasing the speed limit will highly improve the safety of those entering and exiting via these access points. 6) As evidenced by the high number of incidents, a 45 mph speed limit is too fast for vehicles turning onto Waukazoo Drive from Ottawa Beach Road. 7) A lower speed limit reduces the number and severity of car-to-car accidents: Slower speeds result in fewer and less severe collisions.   8) High number of RVs, Cars/Trucks with Camping and Boat Trailers: The danger posed by these vehicles would be greatly reduced with a 35 mph speed limit. 9) Lane reduction should equal speed reduction: The reduction from 4 lanes to 2 at 160th Ave. provides the perfect opportunity to start the 35 mph speed limit.  10) Eliminate the current speed limit confusion caused by 4 different speed limits between 160th Ave. and Holland State Park. 11) A lower speed limit would be consistent with the idea of this stretch of Ottawa Beach Road being the Park Township Gateway to Lake Michigan. 12) Overwhelming Community Support: over the years as evidenced by the calls, letters, and emails to Park Township regarding this issue. 13) Create consistency with South Shore Drive on the south side of Lake Macatawa, which has a 35mph speed limit.  Together we can make a difference!
