Remove Mr. Manas Kumar Sanyal as the person in charge of placement and hire a full time placement officer.
The Issue
Respected Sir,
I am an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology.
As a former student of this University, I am pained to see the placement scenario of our college. While the comparable campuses of Jadavpur University and NIT Durgapur has made giant strides over the past few years, we are continuing with a situation where the vast majority of our graduates join mass recruiters ( < 4LPA salaries) right out of college.
Although a few of the better recruiters might have visited our campus over the last couple of years; I believe that we should strive to be at a position where top recruiters like Intel, TI, Microsoft, Google, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Schlumberger, Shell, Honda, Hyundai, John Deere, Adani Group, Volvo etc visit our campus regularly.
While I completely agree that placement is not binding on the part of the Institute, I sincerely believe Sir, that attracting the best talent that we can is of paramount importance. Engineering aspirants in this country consider placement as a vital parameter when they decide on the Institute they want to join for their undergraduate/postgraduate studies; often it is the only parameter. I am convinced that placements cannot be neglected.
I would also like to state that I/We have always had extremely cordial relations with Mr. Sanyal and have tremendous respect for him as an individual and as a teacher. This is nothing personal. But all said and done, while comparable Institutes like Jadavpur and NIT Durgapur have made giant strides, we have not. This is just about accountability.
Also, with the progress Jadavpur has made over the last year with the appointment of a full time placement officer and the results that are for all to see, I believe that it high time for us to a make a similar change. The placement officer needs to be someone from the industry, and someone with a go-getter attitude. With the right team in place, we can be just as good, if not better.
Thanking You,
