Why this petition matters

In respect for Mayang Prasetyo we request that you make a public apology about the article "Killed and cooked trans woman was high-class ‘shemale’ sex worker", and other related articles. We request that future articles relating to the transgender and sex worker communities are in line with your Code of Conduct

Im contacting you in regard to my extreme displeasure and dissatisfaction in the report entitled "Killed and cooked trans woman was high-class 'shemale' sex worker". I am seeking justification and explanation for the terminology used throughout the Courier Mail's reporting on this incidence as well as the relevance Mayang Prasetyo's sex assigned at birth has to her horrific murder.

Rather than persecuting the offender in this case it appears that Courier Mail is attempting to justify or trivialise Mayang's murder on the basis of her transgender status.

I would like to make reference to Courier Mail's own "Code of Conduct" as it appears on your website which states "8.1 Do not make pejorative reference to a person’s race, nationality, colour, religion, marital status, sex, sexual preferences, age, or physical or mental capacity. No details of a person’s race, nationality, colour, religion, marital status, sex, sexual preferences, age, or physical or mental incapacity should be included in a report unless they are relevant." I question how Mayang's sex assigned at birth is relevant to her murder if not to sensationalise a horrific act? The story contained on your page certainly provides no further insight into the relevance of Mayang's sex assigned at birth nor her history as a sex worker as this murder was committed by an individual who was clearly aware of her transgender status and work history and would therefore not be eligible for defence under any country's "panic" law- thus making this information irrelevant.

We also demand that you run an article about the prevalence of gender-related violence in Australia and worldwide- with the latest statistics showing 1509 reported murders in the last six years

I would like to highlight the importance of an organisation such as News Limited being culturally competent- something which has clearly been lacking in the editorial process of this, and all other stories on Mayang's tragic death, story. The transgender community experience some of the highest levels of violence in any minority and the propagation, scandalisation and trivialisation of stories like this which diminish a horrific domestic violence crime to a focus on transsexualism (which for the record is no longer the appropriate terminology) does nothing but perpetuate this violent cycle. News Limited should be deeply ashamed of the terminology used in this story as well as the clear 'victim blaming' it implies.
