Last week, in response to a live stream of the Black Lives Matter protests based out of Houston, the editor of The Courier Express, David Sullens left a comment reading "Good time and place to eliminate the whole bunch." 

The Courier Express not only took a week to respond to the incident with an apology from the Editor, but the apology itself was lacking, and no public action is being taken against David Sullens. There is no excuse in 2020 for ignorant and racist remarks, "accidental" or otherwise.

There are few institutions more important to American life than the local newspaper, and those institutions are among the most trusted news outlets in our day. To work in a local newsroom is to carry a responsibility to its community. To display such shameful and heartless contempt towards anyone seeking justice against a system that has failed them -- advocating violence against fellow American citizens -- is a total dereliction of that responsibility. We, the members of your community, are here to hold you accountable. 

We demand that David Sullens resign, effective immediately. If he will not resign, we demand that The Courier Express fire him immediately. We deserve voices in our institutions that serve us and better our communities. David has demonstrated he can't live up to that standard. Allow someone to take his place who can.
