The Cost of Free Speech:Unveiling Invisible Violence Behind Online
The Issue
The movement for the “Sulli Act” is rooted in modern digital history.Sulli, a famous South Korea artists, was not only a victim of a single incident but also a target of long-term collective bulling.
For years,Sulli faced a lot of relentless and malicious comments. From baseless rumors about her personal life to aggressive insult for her publicize of women’s rights. She was attacked by anonymous users. These attackers exploited shield of anonymity to project their bias where Sulli was the constant target.Under these attacks,Sulli eventually committed suicide.
This tragedy isn’t accidental. Its cause comes from the psychological network de-suppression effect and lack of empathy, which turns people into aggressive cyber mobs under high-pressure society and strict moral standards, and under the situation of platform algorithms pushing ,and law deficiencies.Forcing us to face the necessity whether online anomnymity should be restricted or not.
In order to effectively solve this problem, in addition to promoting law reforms such as the Shirley Law which make online speakers be responsible for their words and establishing a limited real-name system.Network platforms must also optimize the review mechanism and algorithm to curb the spread of hatred. And the empathy of the online community should be rebuilt through digital civic education.
So,the most powerful thing the public can do is refuse to be a bystander. If we refuse to follow ''hate clicks'' and gossip, it won't be profitable to be mean anymore.
Through these maybe we can build a security protection network to prevent the tragedy while maintaining freedom of speech.
