Channel 7 please don't air 'seven year switch'
The issue
We live in a world that promotes consumerism. If something breaks, we throw it away and get a new one. We want the latest gadget, the newest craze. The garbage tips are getting fuller and our wallets are getting emptier.
The new series, ‘Seven Year Switch’, portrays marriage vows to be as dispensable as a broken chair, and encourages couples to explore whether, as one website states, “The grass is greener on the other side.” What message are we sending this generation, one that is already bombarded with a consumerist mindset? That it’s okay to look elsewhere if you’re having difficulty in your relationship? If it gets hard, just give up and move onto something, or someone, else? This is not a message I want to portray.
If we want our society to grow and build positive relationships, where each partner talks to the other when they have an issue with them, where a bump in the road is not seen as a dead end but an opportunity to grow and build resilience then we need to promote communication and effort between each other, not betrayal and adultery as ‘Seven Year Switch’ certainly seems to.
The notion that going to live with a stranger will some how bring them back in to the arms of their partner with new passion for them is dangerous and destructive. Marriage is not only about romance and first date experiences but it is about journeying through life together through the good and hard times.
Marriage and healthy relationships are so much more valuable than ratings and popularity please reconsider the airing this show.
